Soybean Production Prediction Based on Its Relationship to Climate Change (Case Study in Karawang, Indonesia)
Abstract
As a global issue, climate change significantly affects agricultural activities because of extreme weather, shifting rainfall patterns, and increasing temperatures. We evaluated the relationship between climate change and soybean production with the case study in Karawang, Indonesia. Linear regression and Pearson correlation analyses examined climate change trends in six subdistricts of Karawang and their relationship with soybean production factors. The present study evaluated the data from two periods: 1991–2005 and 2006–2020 and found that soybean production could decrease by 6,595.19 tons due to a 60% reduction in harvest area, totaling 1,139.41 ha, despite a productivity increase of 5.91 in the latter period. Pearson correlation analysis indicated a significant positive relationship between air temperature and soybean productivity, while rainfall showed no significant correlation. However, projections reveal a decline in soybean production due to declining soybean harvest area by 2030. The study focused on soybeans in Karawang, but the method can be applied to other regions and crops for broader climate change mitigation research.
