Ethnopharmacological study of anti-malaria plant species from the african pharmacopeia in Man, Côte d’Ivoire

Abstract

This study was executed in the city of Man to fight against malaria which is a public health problem in Africa and particularly in Côte d’Ivoire. One hundred and two (102) people were interviewed for this purpose, among which they were 70 herborists and 32 traditional healers. The study led to the inventory of 28 plant species distributed into 18 botanical families with a predominance of Fabaceae. The main plants are Albizia lebbeck (Fabaceae), Costus afer (Costaceae), Tectona grandis (Verbenaceae) and Griffonia simplicifolia (Fabaceae). Several plant’s parts are used for medicinal recipes. The leaf (64.28%) is the most concerned. Phytomedicines preparations are either decoction (68.42%), either kneading (15.79%), either trituration (9.89%) or maceration (4.63%). Many modes of administration are practiced, where oral route by drinking is the main way (42.10%) followed by body bath (28.94%) and anal route (23.68%). The phytochemical screening of aqueous extracts from the mentioned plants exhibited sterols, polyterpens, polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponosides. The presence of such chemical groups helped to understand the anti-malaria potential of these plants. Which one could justify their empirical use in the treatment of that disease. Therefore, A. lebbeck, C. afer, T. grandis and G. simplicifolia should be investigated in dept pharmacologically for implementing novel solutions to overcome malaria.
