Extraction Techniques and Optimization Strategies for Phytochemicals from Annona muricata Leaf: A Comprehensive Review (2010-2024)

Abstract

Annona muricata, also known as soursop, possesses a diverse phytochemical profile that includes acetogenins (annonaceous), flavonoids, alkaloids, and volatile oils, making it a tropical plant of medicinal interest. This paper systematically reviewed traditional and modern extraction techniques, including maceration, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), and microwave-assisted extraction. The major challenges discovered are the yield inconsistency of phytochemicals, a tuning problem in extraction parameters, and scaling up for commercial purposes. Facing these problems, this paper examines the response surface methods and artificial neural networks as optimization tools. It shows how scalable, sustainable, and reliable methods of extraction are necessary for the future. This provides a detailed review of its medicinal and cosmeceutical benefits, followed by opportunities to use it as a nutraceutical in the future.
