QTL Mapping for Stay-green and Peduncle Length in Bread Wheat (Triticum aestivum)
Abstract
Stay-green is an important trait contributing to the yield performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), as it maintains photosynthesis for a longer duration during the grain-filling stage. In the present study, two contrasting parental lines, Mairaj-08 (stay-green) and Auqaab-2000 (non-stay-green), were crossed to develop an F2 population. A total of 104 individuals from the segregating F2 population were evaluated for morphometric traits and QTLs using molecular markers. Single marker regression, simple interval mapping, and composite interval mapping were performed, leading to the identification of significant QTLs. A QTL for the stay-green trait, linked to marker Xgwm44 on chromosome 7D, was identified with a regression value of 0.283 (P < 0.01). Similarly, a QTL for peduncle length, linked to marker Xgwm132 on chromosome 6A, showed a regression value of 0.205 (P < 0.05). These identified QTLs may be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in wheat breeding programs aimed at further genetic improvement.
